July might not feel like a natural moment for reflection—you’re in the thick of summer schedules, staff PTO, and high-energy kids hopped up on popsicles. But it’s actually the perfect time to pause and look at the big picture.
You’ve made it halfway through the year. Fall is coming, and before you get swept up in back-to-school planning, licensing deadlines, or budget season, now is the time to stop and ask:
What’s working? What’s not? And where are we headed?
Here’s a simple mid-year check-in to help you assess your center’s performance and identify areas for refocusing in the second half of the year.
Review your enrollment and waitlist
Start with the numbers. Are your classrooms full? Are families on your waitlist hearing from you?
If enrollment is lower than expected, now’s a great time to evaluate your marketing efforts, referral process, or community outreach. If your waitlist is long but conversions are low, it may be time to revisit your follow-up strategy or how you communicate your center’s value.
Ask yourself:
- Are we on track to meet fall enrollment goals?
- Do we have systems in place to keep our pipeline warm?
- What’s our current family retention rate—and why?
Check-in with your staff (and yourself)
Your team’s morale matters. Burnout in early childhood education is real, and summer can magnify it. Mid-year is a good time to ask:
- Are staff still aligned with our values and expectations?
- Are our schedules, breaks, and training opportunities setting them up to succeed?
- Am I leading with clarity, support, and consistency?
Even a short one-on-one or anonymous feedback form can surface issues you didn’t realize were simmering—and help you fix them before fall hits.
Look at your systems
Are your tools working for you—or are you working around them? Check-in on your admin processes:
- Are we tracking attendance and ratios accurately?
- Are billing and payments running smoothly?
- Is our daycare software being used to its full potential?
A small systems tweak now could save you serious stress later in the year.
Reflect on your goals
Go back to whatever goals you set in January—written down or not. Were you hoping to expand? Improve parent communication? Raise staff wages?
If you’ve made progress, celebrate it. If you haven’t started yet, there’s still time.
Ask:
- What’s our biggest win so far this year?
- What’s one thing we’ve put off that needs attention?
- What would make the most significant difference in the next six months?
Mid-year doesn’t need to mean a complete overhaul—it’s just a chance to get intentional again. Take what’s working and keep building. Identify what’s dragging and make small moves toward change.
You’re already doing the hard part: showing up. Now’s your moment to step back and ensure you’re moving forward in the right direction.
